Why do my car brakes 'twang'?

I've recently noticed a sound when I apply the brakes in my Ford Ka, when I push the brake pedal gradually down there's a noticeable twanging sound once it gets to the floor. It hasn't done this before, the brakes still work absolutely fine, but is it something that could indicate a bigger problem? Should I be worried?
