What to put in cut on puppy's side?

I think the chain on the momma dog must have pinched a spot on one of her puppies, and I need to put something on it to keep the flies off. I put kerosene on them already for the fleas, but it doesn't seem to help. So I need something to keep the flies off and the mud out of the wound until it heals. Any suggestions?
