I usually buy the brand name, having been very disappointed in the quality of most of the generics I've bought. One can of soup was so salty it was inedible and contained something like 5 times the recommended daily allowance of salt. I even returned it and asked for my money back. But, like another poster said, I don't buy many prepared foods and that's where the generics save you money. On non-food items, the generic seems to do just as well most of the time.
